Suffering from server sprawl, out of control power and cooling costs and uneven server utilization? Consolidating your servers from many disparate physical servers to fewer, better utilized virtual servers can save money, simplify your infrastructure, provide better data protection, and give you the power to expand quickly.
Consolidating servers through virtualization offers a wide range of benefits:

  • Savings – Fewer servers and lower energy consumption costs lead to an environment that costs less to maintain.
  • Simplification – Virtualization makes it much easier to add applications by simply adding a virtual machine, not a whole new physical server.
  • Scaling out – Achieve a better solution for managing a workload across a pool of servers and storage.

Server Consolidation

How much can you save through consolidation?
A typical server complement of 20 physical servers can be consolidated all the way down to just three servers running 20 virtual machines1. Over three years, physical servers are replaced with virtual machines running with virtualization software on HP ProLiant iVirtualizaton servers. Eliminating 17 physical servers provides some substantial cost benefits, illustrated in the chart and table below.

Year one savings $18,472
Year two savings $23,272
Year three savings $24,030
Total $65,4741

Virtual machine manager software – the essential bridge
Virtual machine software (also known as a hypervisor) creates the virtual machines (VMs) that share hardware resources and transparently function as individual entities on the network. HP virtualization provides the right hypervisor for your unique business needs.

  • Citrix XenServer offers straightforward deployment, with management embedded fully in HP ProLiant Virtual Console.
  • VMware ESX Server 3 provides three tiers of functionality, a centralized management console and options available to maintain, upgrade and grow your environment.

Server consolidation does not have to be an ordeal. HP’s new servers with ProLiant iVirtualization  go from box to virtualized server in minutes, while the Virtualization How-To Guide shows you how to start from where you are right now.

1. Assumptions: approximate cost of powering and cooling based on $800 cost per 1P server; assumes 10 hours to provision a non-virtual server and 2 hours for a virtual server, a 1/3rd per year replacement cycle, and a $40/hour labor rate; servers in base case replaced at a rate of 7 the first year, 7 the second year, and 6 the third year over three years. The virtualized scenario replaces 7 servers with one physical server and seven virtual machines the first year; another 7 servers with one physical server and seven virtual machines the second year; and 6 servers with one physical server the third year. The servers used in the Base Case are HP ProLiant ML310 Servers. The virtualized environment uses ProLiant ML370 Servers.
