For most IT environments a mix of both disk and tape backup is the right solution. It provides the rapid recovery of disk with the long term archival cost efficiencies of tape. This multi-tier backup strategy is referred to as Disk to disk to tape, or D2D. For protection of remote sites some D2D systems can efficiently transmit or replicate data over a network link to a central site.
